Large Knife Making

9 am – 4 pm, morning tea and lunch provided

This workshop is for those who want a bit of a workout and the chance to go bigger! Are you looking to craft a larger knife or a meat cleaver? This class lets you forge a blade between 11–14 inches (28–35 cm). No previous experience is required—just bring your enthusiasm, and we’ll guide you through every step.

The difference with the regular knife-making class is that you have more steel to forge. Luckily we have our power hammer to help you with this.

Your finished knife will be something impressive that you’ll cherish and use for years to come.

What to expect?

We’ll kick things off by forging the shape of your knife with a sledgehammer and forging hammer. Then, you’ll refine its profile using linishers. Once that’s done, we’ll harden and temper the blade to ensure it has the right mix of hardness, toughness, and flexibility. After that, it’s time to choose some wood for your handle and attach it using glue and brass rivets.

After lunch, we’ll focus on shaping the handle using a hand grinder, sandpaper, and files. Finally, we’ll sharpen your blade and give your knife a beautiful finishing touch with a beeswax and kawakawa treatment to protect the wood and highlight its natural patterns. Get ready for a fantastic day of crafting!
